In Tribute to Miłosz

The Czesław Miłosz Literary Festival is about more than the promotion of this poet's oeuvre; it is also a point of departure for discussions about contemporary culture and literature. This year's leitmotif will be The Captive Mind, serving as a point of departure for a dialogue on “modern forms of enslavement understood not only in a political, social and religious context but also enslavement by mass culture, the media and advertising”, the organisers have signposted.

As announced by Jerzy Illg – artistic director of the festival – genuine big names from literature’s Parnassus are coming to the festival, including two Nobel Prize winners – Irishman Seamus Heaney and Derek Walcott, who comes from the Caribbean. The following have also announced their participation: Iranian philosopher Ramin Jahanbegloo and South Korean poet Ko Un; Dubravka Ugrešić, Jiří Gruša, Adam Zagajewski, and German writer Hans Magnus Enzensberger. Also present of course will be Kraków's Nobel Prize winner, Wisława Szymborska.

The festival will be taking over the whole of Kraków. Awaiting us are not only meetings with individual writers, but also poetry evenings, collaborative poetry readings, debates featuring well known authors and film screenings.

Honorary patronage over the event has been assumed by President of the City of Kraków Jacek Majchrowski.
