Pope received the key to Krakow’s gates

On Thursday, 28th July, the Krakow Mayor Jacek Majchrowski handed over the symbolic key to Krakow’s gates to Pope Francis. Next, the Pope went to the Błonia Meadows for the Papal welcome ceremony. For the first time in history the Pope chose... a city tram as means of transport to take him to an official meeting!

Handing over the special gift, Mayor Majchrowski said: "There are no words to express our joy from the Holy Father's visit to our city. That is why we would like to give your holiness the key to Krakow's gates. As a token of our joy, a proof of our highest respect, in gratitude for the fact that the World Youth Day, initiated by John Paul II, could be hosted by his beloved Krakow. And with hope that Your Holiness will return to us again".

The symbolic key to Krakow's gates has been designed by Jan Siuta, a sculptor and a painter. It is made from bronze and brass, partly gilt and silver plated. On the key wards we can see the silhouettes of the the most precious Krakow's historical building, among others, the Wawel Castle and the City Hall Tower.
