Consulate General of Hungary – grand return to Krakow!

Closed in 2009 Consulate General of Hungary in Krakow offically reopened on Friday, 14 March. Among the officials present at the event were Mayor of the City of Krakow Jacek Majchrowski, Ministers of Foreign Affairs of both countires - János Martony and Radosław Sikorski, Hungarian Ambassador to Poland Iván Gyurcsik and representatives of the Krakow Region.

Ms. Adrienne Körmendy is the newly nominated Consul General of Hungary residing in its new Krakow headquarters in ul. Lubicz 17.

Krakow is a place of unique importance for the Polish-Hungarian relationship. It was here that Saint Ladislaus (László), second greatest king of Hungary was born, it is also the city of Saints Kinga and Hedwig. For centuries, Jagiellonian University served as the main academic centre for both Poles and Hungarians.

The first Hungarian consulate in Krakow established in 1918 operated until the early days of World War II. It was reopened in 1994 owing to the efforts of Prof. István Kovács – an eminent specialist in Polish literature,  historian and an avid advocate for Polish-Hungarian friendship. Prof. Kovács supported many actions to promote Hungarian culture in Poland: exhibitions, erection of monuments and placques, commemorating historic Hungarian figures present in Krakow throughout the ceturies. He also served as Consul General of the Republic of Hungary in Krakow in the years 1994-1995 and 1999-2003 and became the first Hungarian to be awarded the title of an Honorary Citizen of the City of Krakow.

The consulate was closed by Hungarian authorities in 2009. Owing to many efforts, also by the current Hungarian Ambassador, on the eve of their national holiday (15 March), Krakow could celebrate the return of its Hungarian friends. With partner cities of Budapest and Pecs, Krakow will hopefully benefit from the launch of this new institution and witness a boost of cultural, social and business cooperation between the two nations.
