Message from Mayor of Kyoto
On 11th March 2011 northeast Japan was hit with the most powerful earthquake in 140 years. The magnitude 9.0 (Mw) earthquake triggered a devastating tsunami wave and a nuclear disaster in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, the gravest nuclear disaster since Cherrnobyl. At least 21 thousand people are dead or missing.
The most affected cities were Natori, Ishinomaki, Kamaishi and Miyako. More than 400 thousand residents were evacuated from dangerous areas.
A year after the earthquake, the tsunami wave and nuclear disaster in Fukushima the Japanese still struggle with radioactive contamination. The number of tourists visiting Japan has decreased dramatically.
Therefore, Mayor of Kyoto - the former capital of the country, not affected by the earthquake - has made efforts to appease the public opinion and encourage tourist to visit it.
He recommends the newly created website informing that Kyoto is a safe city with no noticeable consequences of the earthquake and the following nuclear accident in 2011. Individual sections present the results of actions taken to assure the safety of water, air and food as well as disaster prevention programs implemented in Kyoto.
