European experts on the origins and consequences of the Roma Holocaust

The international symposium „Beyond the Roma Holocaust: From Resistance to Mobilisation” will be held on 21st and 22nd October 2016 in Cracow.  20 European academics – including Polish and European Roma – will discuss the origins of the Roma genocide during the Second World War and the influence of the Porajmos on the current situation of Roma communities in Europe.

The symposium, organised by the Austrian Embassy and the Pedagogical University of Cracow, is held on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the deportation of 5,000 Austrian Roma to the ghetto in Łódź and their subsequent murder in the extermination camp 'Kulmhof' in Chełmno nad Nerem.

The symposium takes place under the auspices of the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Republic of Poland, Dr Adam Bodnar, who will officially open the conference together with Dr Stanislaw Sorys, Vice-Marshal of the Małopolska Voivodship.  Professor Sławomir Kapralski is responsible for the scientific co-ordination of the symposium.

The Austrian Ambassador to Poland Dr Thomas M. Buchsbaum said prior to the symposium: “It is important for me that the symposium presents the Roma Holocaust Porajmos not only in terms of historical analysis, but also draws intellectual and practical conclusions from this event and its consequences.  The symposium will also present the modern Roma identities and movements as well as attempt to provide an outlook on their future.”

The symposium will be held in English at the Pedagogical University of Cracow (Podchorążych St. 2) and is open to the public. The programme of the conference is available on the website of the Austrian Embassy: www.ambasadaaustrii.pl/pl. Please register your attendance at the symposium with aleksandra.radziwon@bmeia.gv.at.

The symposium is organised in cooperation with the Małopolska Voivodship, the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, the Austrian wine importer Modus Vivendi in Warsaw and the Austrian Culture Forum in Warsaw.
