Krakow Christmas cribs to enter the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage

The tradition and craft of building Krakow Christmas cribs as well as the Lajkonik might be entered on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

First steps towards the title have already been taken. Two applications to the National Heritage Board of Poland, filed by Krakow Christmas crib makers and members of the Lajkonik retinue, were endorsed by the Historical Museum of the City of Krakow.

Intangible Cultural Heritage, as defined by the UNESCO Convention of 2003, means 'the practices, representations, expressions, knowledge, and skills – as well as the instruments, objects, artifacts and cultural spaces associated therewith – that communities, groups and, in some cases, individuals recognize as part of their cultural heritage. This intangible cultural heritage, transmitted from generation to generation, is constantly recreated by communities and groups in response to their environment, their interaction with nature and their history, and provides them with a sense of identity and continuity, thus promoting respect for cultural diversity and human creativity'.

An exhibition of colourful, dazzling and joyful Christmas cribs entered in this year's edition of the annual competition organised by the Historical Museum of the City of Krakow is now open to the public in the Krzysztofory Palace (Rynek Główny 35).
