The 66th International Mathematical Olympiad was held on Australia’s Sunshine Coast and ended in resounding success for the Poles. Polish students tied with Japan for fourth place — their best result in over 50 years! Among the talented youngsters were two students from Kraków’s Fifth Lyceum: Magdalena Pudełko and Antoni Mazur.
Polish students won three gold and three silver medals, placing them fourth in the world rankings at the Olympiad, tied with Japan. They were the best among European countries. The gold medals were won by Magdalena Pudełko of the August Witkowski V General Education Lyceum in Kraków, and by Stanisław Lada and Jakub Świcarz of the Stanisław Staszic XIV General Education Lyceum in Warsaw. The silver medals included one for Antoni Mazur, the other representative of the Kraków V General Education Lyceum.
The Olympiad in Australia is not the only success for Magdalena Pudełko and her teammates. Notably, she was the first woman to win the Polish National Mathematical Olympiad with the highest score in both the first and second rounds. Thanks in part to this achievement, Magdalena earned her place among the world’s best young mathematicians competing in Australia.
The medals won in Australia mark Poland’s best result since 1973, when only 16 countries participated.
