Kraków joins European efforts to improve road safety

The City of Kraków has joined initiatives carried out under the European Road Safety Charter (ERSC).

The ERSC is a platform for cooperation between EU institutions and public bodies as well as civil society organisations from EU Member States. Its primary goal is to reduce the number of road accidents and road fatalities. By joining the Charter, Kraków becomes part of a broader international effort to create safer cities and safer roads.

Kraków’s participation in the ERSC brings tangible, multi-level benefits for the city, its residents and local institutions. The city gains access to Europe’s largest community of road safety professionals, including experts, EU institutions, national contact points, and other Polish and European cities implementing effective road safety programmes. The ERSC enables the exchange of experience among more than 3,500 members who share proven solutions and models of action.

A strong emphasis within the ERSC is placed on educational and social initiatives that promote responsible behaviour. Each year, the platform recognises the most effective ideas and campaigns, inspiring other cities to implement them and, above all, enabling members to showcase their own projects at the European Union level.

The use of such projects by other ERSC members strengthens local preventive efforts by applying European standards to systemic measures that enhance the safety of infrastructure, road users and vehicles. These actions can be adapted to specific locations or demographic groups, allowing for the development of effective road safety strategies tailored to individual countries, regions or cities.

By signing the European Road Safety Charter, its members declare that, through the implementation of their own preventive programmes, they will support the European Commission in putting EU road safety policies into practice.
