Emperor’s Birthday - national holiday of Japan

The currently reigning Emperor Naruhito celebrates his birthday on 23 February and the day is Japan’s national holiday.

Emperor Naruhito ascended to the Chrysanthemum Throne on 1 May 2019. Following tradition, the day marked the beginning of a new era called Reiwa. The previous era, Heisei, ended on 30 April 2019, the day of the abdication of Naruhito’s father, Emperor Akihito.
