On 17 August Indonesians celebrate their most important National Holiday.
It marks the Indonesia's declaration of independence from the Netherlands proclaimed in 1945 by Sukarno, the leader of country’s nationalist movement, who became the first president of Indonesia.
The celebrations starts on 16 August and public buildings and places are adorned in national colours of Indonesia, red and white, for the rest of the month.
