National Day of Iceland

Icelanders celebrate their National Day on 17 June. The union with Denmark was dissolved and Iceland was declared an independent republic on this date in 1944.

In Reykjavik the official celebrations start with bells ringing out at the Dómkirkja Cathedral, located very near the house of parliament. There are traditional events like official speeches and laying of wraths but also exhibitions and open air concerts are organised to mark this special day for all Icelanders.

Gleðilegur Þjóðhátíðardagur!
