Major survey on Kraków after dark – have your say!
The Municipality of Kraków invites all residents to take part in a survey about whether they spend time outside their homes in the evening and at night, how they use the city during these hours, and how they assess the way it functions. The results will help shape future action aimed at balancing night-time activity with residents’ comfort.
Complete the anonymous online questionnaire and help make Kraków an even more comfortable place to live after dark. It will take only a few minutes. The survey is open from 13 July to 14 August 2026. The questionnaire is available in Polish, but the language is straightforward and should be understandable even to people with a basic knowledge of Polish.
What is the survey about?
‘We want to find out how Kraków residents use the city between 6.00 pm and 5.00 am, and how their activities differ between weekdays and weekends,’ explains Kraków’s Night Mayor, Jacek Jordan.
We also ask residents to assess various aspects of how Kraków functions in the evening and at night, including the availability of night-time public transport, the range of leisure opportunities, street lighting, cleanliness, access to services near their homes, and what they feel is most lacking in their area.
We are particularly keen to receive responses from all parts of Kraków. We therefore encourage residents not only to complete the questionnaire, but also to share it with neighbours and friends, as well as in local groups and on social media pages. The more responses we receive from individual districts, the more accurately we will be able to identify local needs.
Why 6.00 pm to 5.00 am?
There is no single, universally accepted definition in academic literature of the hours covered by the night-time economy. One reason is seasonality: in winter, it gets dark much earlier than in summer, so the term ‘after dark’ is not sufficiently precise on its own.
For the purposes of the survey, we have adopted the period from 6.00 pm to 5.00 am, as proposed by Dr Robert Pawlusiński of the Jagiellonian University, an expert on the Commission for a Sustainable Night-Time Economy. This time frame covers both evening and night-time activity and reflects Kraków’s social, geographical and cultural circumstances.
