Nuremberg, whose name comes from "nuorenberc" (a rocky mountain), is considered to be the economic and cultural capital of Franconia. It is the second largest city in Bavaria. The city has a rich commercial history, having obtained many privileges at an early date which shaped it into one of the biggest business centres in Europe. From 1219 the city was made the Imperial Free City owing to the Great Charter of Freedoms. The city blossomed in the 15th and 16th centuries, becoming the centre of the German Renaissance. The city's turbulent history has made it one of the most important places in Germany. Traces of Nuremberg's rich past can be found in its historic buildings. Overlooking the city is the Nuremberg Castle, a complex of three buildings consisting of the Emperor's castle, the castle of the count and the city castle can be found. The city is surrounded by fortifications with towers and a Renaissance City Hall is situated on the market square. The city's famous personages include sculptor and painter Veit Stoss and painter Albrecht Dürer whose works may be admired at the Albrecht Dürer House museum.
