Milan is the second largest city in Italy, located on the north-west border of the Padan Plain. The city was settled in the 4th century BC by the Celtic Insubres and the earliest mention of Mediolanum appeared in the 3rd century BC. In 286 Milan became the capital of the Roman Empire and remained the imperial residence until 402. Milan is the most important Italian economic and financial centre, being the seat of numerous banks, insurance companies and the stock exchange (Borsa Italiana), and at the same time one of the wealthiest cities in Europe. Milan is a university city where three universities and other higher education institutions are situated. There is also the Academy of Literature and scientific institutes. Due to its numerous historic buildings, Milan is a significant centre of international tourism. It is in Milan that the world-famous opera theatre La Scala has been operating since 1778, and many outstanding Italian operas were designed to be performed at this stage, e.g. opera masterpieces of the greatest Italian composer - Giuseppe Verdi.
