Bordeaux is situated on the Garonne River in southwest France, in the Aquitaine region of the Gironde department, 97 kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean. Already in ancient times, as a Roman-Celtic town called Burdigala, it was an important cultural centre of Gaul. Later, Bordeaux frequently played an important role in the history of France, e.g. it was a home for Girondists during the French Revolution. During the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) as well as World War I and World War II it was a temporary seat of the French government. Nowadays, the city is the most important business, cultural and scientific centre of southwest France. Among many different branches of industry, winemaking deserves special mention - wines of the Bordeaux region are well-known all over the world. The city is also an important transportation hub - with its avant-ports (Le Verdon, Pauillac) it is one of the largest and most important seaports in France. Bordeaux may also be proud of its significant number of universities, including the world-famous Université de Bordeaux.
