This city situated on the Danube River was founded in the 19th century by the unification of three towns: Buda and Óbuda on the right bank of the river and Pest on the left bank. At present the city is the capital of Hungary and one of the most important and most beautiful metropolises in Central Europe. Budapest is an important cultural centre with the National Library, numerous museums, galleries, theatres and opera houses. The city also boasts the Academy of Sciences established in 1635, University, Technical University founded in 1782, Academy of Fine Arts and many other educational centres and research institutes. The capital city of Hungary is also an important industrial centre generating 60% of national production and a transportation hub of international importance. Every year, the beauty of Budapest's numerous monuments attracts thousands of tourists, for whom hot mineral springs are an additional attraction. In Budapest there is a Polish church and the Polish Institute was established thanks to the efforts of Poles living in Hungary.
