Gothenburg is located in the west of Sweden (at the mouth of the river Göta älv which flows into Kattegatt). Gothenburg is the capital of the Västra Götaland region and the second largest city in Sweden. It was founded in the early 17th century by Dutch architects working for King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden, who wanted to free Swedish trade from custom duties collected by Denmark in the Danish straits. Established in 1731 in Gothenburg, the Swedish East India Company, which quickly developed trade relations with China and the East, in fact made a key contribution to the economic and business development of Sweden. In the 19th century, due to merchants from Great Britain, the city started to transform into an important industrial centre, which resulted in dynamic infrastructure development. Today's Gothenburg is an important cultural, educational and innovation centre as well as the largest sports city in Sweden. The best Swedish football team IFK Göteborg, which has won the Swedish Championships and the Swedish Premier League multiple times, and the UEFA Cup - twice, comes from Gothenburg.
