Leipzig is the largest city in Saxony and the second largest - after Berlin - in eastern Germany. In the 10th century Leipzig was still a small Slavic settlement. Its dynamic development began in the 12th century together with the location of a German trade settlement there and endowment of city with market privileges (1165). Trading traditions are cultivated with great care in this city which at present is an important cultural and educational centre and transportation hub (with one of the largest railway stations in Europe). Leipzig is the seat of a modern exhibition and congress hall. Since the 15th century The Leipzig Trade Fair is regularly organized, and since 1594 the Leipzig Book Fair is held there. The Leipzig University, founded in 1409, was one of the first in Germany. Moreover, the lives of many leading representatives of world culture and arts are connected with Leipzig, including J. W. Goethe, J. S. Bach, F. Mendelssohn or R. Wagner. Leipzig is famous worldwide for its Gewandhaus Orchestra.
