Seville is situated on the River Guadalquivir and linked with the Atlantic Ocean by means of navigable channels. It is the fourth largest city of Spain, the capital and the main city of Andalusia and the administrative centre of the province of Seville. It was founded by the Iberians probably in the 2nd century BC and can be proud of its rich history displayed to this day by the numerous historic buildings of the city - e.g. the Alcazar - the former royal palace, the Santa Maria Cathedral - one of the greatest Gothic churches in the world (with a tomb of Christopher Columbus), the Renaissance-era building of the commercial exchange and the Archivo de Indias (Archive of the Indies) - a documentary repository of overseas Spanish residences, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Seville is an important tourist and commercial centre and the capital of "flamenco" Andalusia folklore.
