Solothurn is situated on the Aare river and its origins date back to ancient times when it was a Celtic settlement named Salodurum, where the Romans built their stronghold in 370 (the remains of the Roman castrum are visible even today). Solothurn became a part of the Swiss Confederation in 1481 as the eleventh canton. Solothurn's residents have a special affinity to the number eleven: there are eleven towers, eleven churches and chapels, eleven historical fountains as well as eleven guilds. Solothurn aptly aspires to be called the Baroque centre of Switzerland. Solothurn is connected with Poland, in particular with Krakow, thanks to the figure of Tadeusz Kościuszko who spent last years of his life there. Today, at 12 Gurzelngasse in Solothurn - at Kościuszko's former apartment - there is the Kościuszko Museum.
