Situated on the northern bank of the Sava river, at the bottom of Medvednica mountain, Zagreb is the largest city in Croatia (part of Zagreb metropolitan area), the capital city of the country (since 1991) and the capital of Zagreb County (zagrebačkiej županiji). Zagreb is an independent administrative region. The first recorded mention of the name Zagreb is dated 1094, whereas since at least 1557 it was a settlement considered to be a capital. Founded in 1669 and still operating, the University of Zagreb is the oldest in Croatia and one of the oldest universities in south eastern Europe. The city is also a complex of numerous cultural institutions, a regional business centre and an important transportation hub. Zagreb is also the home of many football teams, including Dinamo Zagreb - the winner of eight titles in the Croatian Supercup.
