The city of Strasbourg is located in the north-eastern part of France. It was established in 12 BC and in AD 500 it became a part of the Kingdom of the Franks. Strasbourg is the capital and principal business, industrial and educational and cultural centre of the Alsace region and the Bas-Rhin department. In the past Strasbourg, which until the 18th century was an important theological centre whose architectural traces are visible today (numerous monasteries, congregations, churches and synagogues, etc.) used to be called "the city of a thousand churches". Up to the present day, the city centre - situated on a quasi island, surrounded by channels and being a unique complex of historic and monumental buildings -raises enthusiasm among tourists (the centre of Strasbourg was listed as the UNESCO World Heritage Site). Since 1949 Strasbourg has been the seat of the Council of Europe, and since 1979 - of the European Parliament. Strasbourg is the headquarters of the "Strasbourg Club" - an organisation joining Central and East European cities. The city is also the seat of General Consulate of the Republic of Poland.
