Veliko Tarnovo is situated in the north-central Bulgaria on the picturesque Yantra River, on several hills, the most important of which include: Sveta Gora, Trapezitsa and Tsarevets. Veliko Tarnovo is one of the oldest cities in Bulgaria, the historical capital city of the Second Bulgarian Empire, the symbol of Bulgarian independence and statehood (it was here that the National Assembly ratified the Bulgarian constitution twice - in 1879 and 1990). In the times of flowering of the Bulgarian state, in the 13th and 14th centuries, Veliko Tarnovo was a significant political, economic and cultural centre in Europe. Schools such as the Tarnovo Artistic School or Tarnovo Literary School were established at that time. At present, the city is the capital of the Veliko Tarnovo Province. The International Folklore Festival is organised here.
