Although present day Trondheim is only the third most populous municipality in Norway, it is one of the most important tourist destinations of the country, as well as an important cultural, academic and industrial centre. The city was first known as Kaupangen (trading place), later Nidaros (mouth of the river Nid). This name is associated with Trondheim’s most beautiful monument: Nidarosdomen (the Nidaros Cathedral). It is the oldest church in Skandinavia, a jewel of Gothic architecture modeled on the Cathedral of Canterbury. Every year 400 thousand tourists visit the cathedral which is the burial place of Norway’s patron saint, Olav. Trondheim is also an attractive center of winter sports and fishing, it is attractive to music lovers (numerous music festivals are held here) and fans of Norwegian cuisine.
