40 years of partnership with Leipzig. Mayor’s visit

On Sunday 6 January 2013 Mayor of the City of Krakow Jacek Majchrowski paid an official visit to Leipzig. A meeting of city officials marked the beginning of this year's 40th anniversary of the partnership between Krakow and Leipzig.

"I am convinced that this year's anniversary meetings in our cities are not only a way to commemorate the past 40 years of cooperation but also serve as an excellent prognosis for its further development – it is a new step towards even closer relations between our cities" – Mayor Majchrowski wrote in the Golden Book of the City of Leipzig, a special chronicle of entries by eminent visitors to this German city. The official meeting of the Mayor of Krakow with Lord Mayor of Leipzig Burkhard Jung took place in a representative hall of the Old City Hall, today housing the Historical Museum of the City of Leipzig. Before the meeting both mayors participated in a ceremonial service at St Thomas Church with the first performance of Krzysztof Penderecki's Epiphanias-Messe. The work was commissioned by the Bach Archive Leipzig (Bach-Archiv Leipzig) to celebrate an 800-year tradition of  St Thomas Boys' Choir, School and Church.

While in Leipzig Mayor Majchrowski visited the Polish Cultural Institute where he met with its Director Wojciech Więckowski and participated in the screening of A Journey Through the Labyrinth documentary trailer portraying Krzysztof Penderecki's life.

During a dinner hosted by Lord Mayor of Leipzig Jacek Majchrowski met with Markus Kopp, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Poland in Leipzig, and Father Friedrich Magirius, Honorary Citizen of Krakow and a great friend of our city. Towards the end of the visit Mayor Majchrowski visited the famous Battle of the Nations monument. October this year will mark two anniversaries: 200 years' of the historical event and 100 years' of the monument erected to commemorate it.
