SMART&GREEN – international conference
Effective management of urban green areas is an important responsibility of the local authorities which also offers unlimited opportunities for citizen engagement. Green spaces in cities have many roles to play acting as urban green lungs, architectural or decorative components or places for social interaction and relaxation. They also constitute platforms on which citizens, NGOs and cities can cooperate.
To foster such cooperation Mayor of Krakow Jacek Majchrowski invited Kraków’s partner cities and international organisations to participate in an international seminar entitled SMART&GREEN – sustainable management of urban green areas which was held I Krakow on 22-23 May 2017.
The first and theoretical part of the seminar focused on exchange of experiences within several thematic panels:
– Addressing citizen’s needs: pocket parks and green micro spaces in cities. Citizen engagement in designing urban green spaces.
– Urban greenery as a vital tool in our fight against smog. Comprehensive approach to the modelling of urban greenery systems which are one of the elements constituting the urban tissue.
– Revitalisation of postindustrial areas through conversion into green zones.
– Rivers in cities: river front management and establishment of river parks.
The second part of the seminar introdused Kraków’s green solutions and closed with an event held in Henryk Jordan Park where all participants planted new seedlings around the linden tree presented to the City of Krakow by Ann-Sofie Hermansson, Mayor of Gothenburg, Sweden. The newly arranged plants will form the Kraków’s Partner Cities Square which will become a vivid and lasting memento of the cooperation.
