The event – the first of many celebrating the centenary in Krakow -  gathered local inhabitants and representatives of municipal authorities. Krakow’s consuls also joined in as selected trees were dedicated to Krakow’s partners from around the globe, emphasizing the international dimension of Polish independence. When opening the event, Mayor of Krakow Jacek Majchrowski stressed that Poland’s independence – regained in 1918 after 123 years of foreign  rule- was not won overnight and required intensive diplomatic efforts on the international scene.

Among those planting the jubilee trees, which formed the outline of Poland, were local pupils who stressed environmental impact of the event. Krakow, plagued by air pollution, has gained yet another green area to help purify the air. Kraków Municipal Greenspace Authority has already drafted plans to expand the area and create a local park.
