Competition: Design Two New Murals for Kraków
Original creative vision, relevance to the competition theme, harmony with the surrounding environment, as well as social, artistic, and aesthetic value are among the key criteria to be assessed in two international competitions for new murals in Kraków. Kraków invites in public space artists to join the initiative. Project submissions are open until May 27.
The first mural, connected to the celebrations of the Year of Andrzej Wajda in Kraków, is planned to appear on the side wall of the building at 50 Kijowska Avenue. The other, themed around Slavic mythology, will transform the side façade (above the ground-floor level) of the building at 18 Tadeusza Kościuszki.
The first competition marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Andrzej Wajda — the acclaimed film director and artist whose work left a lasting impact on world cinema. The mural design should present a clear and contemporary interpretation of his life and artistic legacy.
The proposed location on Kościuszki Street and its connection with the competition’s leading theme are key for the Slavic mural . The site is situated near the Vistula River and the Royal Castle on Wawel Hill, making it closely tied to Kraków’s history and atmosphere. Artists are encouraged to explore motifs inspired by Slavic mythology while taking into account the city’s cultural and historical context.
Both competitions are held by the City’s Mural Team, which for over four years now and has been developing standards for evaluating Kraków’s murals. Expanding the presence of art and artists in public spaces is an important element of the city’s mural policy. Kraków also continues to support cultural development through collaborations and events showcasing artists from Poland and around the world.
Applications will be accepted until May 27. The competition jury will evaluate submissions by June 10, considering the relationship between the project and its surroundings, artistic and social value, interpretation of the competition theme, originality of the concept, as well as technical considerations and estimated production costs.
The results of the competitions will be announced shortly after the final decision is made.
