One of the issues discussed by the Commission for the Sustainable Night-Time Economy in April and May involved irregularities in night-time taxi services—in particular, cases of fare overcharging in violation of local regulations.

How Much Should You Pay for a Taxi Ride in Kraków?

The final fare includes a starting fee, a charge per kilometer, and—in some cases—a waiting fee (applicable if the passenger temporarily leaves the vehicle).

Maximum fares for both traditional taxis and those ordered via mobile apps within the Municipality of Kraków are set out in Resolution No. XCII/2512/22 of the Kraków City Council dated 6 July 2022, and are as follows:

  • Starting fee: 9 PLN
  • Per kilometer fare at day-time (6:00–22:00):
    ○ 4 PLN in Zone I
    ○ 8 PLN in Zone II
  • Per kilometer fare at night (22:00–6:00), on Sundays and public holidays:
    ○ 6 PLN in Zone I
    ○ 12 PLN in Zone II
  • Waiting fee per hour: 55 PLN

A bilingual sticker listing the maximum rates must be displayed on the rear right-side window.

Pricing Information Example: How Much for a Night Ride?

A night-time ride from Teatr Bagatela to the AGH Student Campus (approx. 2 km) should cost around 21 PLN (9 PLN starting fee + approx. 12 PLN for 2 km).

Mobile Apps vs. City Rates

Note: In practice, popular ride-hailing apps use dynamic pricing during peak demand times. These rates may exceed the city-mandated maximums.

“We’re seeing a situation where ride apps offer unsustainably low prices during the day and then charge inflated rates at night. Drivers, trying to make up for the losses, often speed—endangering safety and contributing to noise pollution, particularly in Kraków’s historic center,” says Piotr Zieliński, member of the Sustainable Night-Time Economy Commission and Vice President of the National TAXI Association.

Where to Report Irregularities

Drivers who charge above the maximum fares risk losing their licenses. If a passenger suspects they’ve been overcharged, they should report the incident to the Vehicle and Driver Records Department of the Municipality of Kraków via email at km.umk@um.krakow.pl, or in person at al. Powstania Warszawskiego 10.

Reports should include a receipt showing the fare and distance traveled (for traditional taxis), or a digital ride summary and a PDF invoice (for app-based rides).
